Your new role
This role contributes to the development and delivery of a connected, informed and meaningful program of First Nations engagement and learning programs at Rockhampton Museum of Art, as part of the engagement and learning program.
The First Nations engagement and learning program encompass a variety of themes drawn from curatorial and exhibition activities to positively enhance the collection. First Nations programs can include story sharing, community engagement, interpretation of collections, art workshops and classes, professional development, and a range of Country-centred workshops and events focused on Indigenous peoples’ management of and relationship to Country.

Project: Place, sites, history and exhibition installing
This project will explore the place, site and history of the new location of Rockhampton Museum of Art in close consultation with Darumbal Enterprises. The primary focus will be to represent Indigenous voices in the story of the place and site of the museum. The way this research is presented may vary depending on the successful applicant, however, resources for future tours and talks should be considered in the outcomes.
With the building of the new museum completed, the installation of exhibitions and storage of collections commences. This project will also be involved in assisting the installation efforts for opening exhibitions working with the museum technicians, curator and First Nations artists.
JANUARY – APRIL 2022
Project: Education (connections, shared voices, and capacity building)
Education programs are a significant part of the First Nations work at the Rockhampton Museum of Art. There is a comprehensive Engagement and Learning Plan that underpins the First Nations programming as well as the public programming at the museum. This project will focus on the specific task of creating methods of engagement with schools to ensure Indigenous youth and children in learning environments are specifically incorporated in the outreach of the museum. Outcomes for this project will include research and planning for the development of digital and other resources that will create opportunities for young First Nations students in schools.
JANUARY – APRIL 2022
Project: Audience Engagement
This placement will focus on developing skills, knowledge and experiences in the Business Development team of the museum. The Arts Assistant will contribute to advancing the First Nations representation in this area of the business by working with staff across the museum as well as the community and the sector. They will draw from best practice and industry standards to ensure the relevant museum’s procedures are comparable with similar institutions. It is envisaged that the outcome of this project will be evidence of authentic First Nations voices across multiple outputs and outcomes in the business development and visitor services sections.
This position requires the completion of a satisfactory Criminal History Check - Police Certificate (Australia Wide Name Only Police Check).
